چکیده

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal potential of Resorcinol (Res) against human fungal pathogen, Candida albicans. In this study, we explored that Res displayed its antifungal potential against two reference strains of C. albicans (ATCC 10261 and ATCC 24433) and five clinical isolates tested. We also showed that Res is equally effective against various nonalbicans species of Candida as well thereby demonstrating its wide repertoire. Notably, the antifungal effect of Res seems to be independent of the activity of major drug efflux pumps transporter which is the major cause of drug resistance in C. albicans. Finally, we also demonstrated that Res inhibits the serum and nitrogen starvation dependent yeast to hyphal transition in C. albicans which is one of the major virulence attribute. Taken together, Res exhibited promising in vitro antifungal properties and potent inhibitor of yeast to hyphal transition that could be used for the treatment of Candida infections. Further cellular and in vivo studies are required to explore its precise mechanism of action.

Comparison of the Antifungal Activity of Honey and Fluconazole against Candida albicans in vitro and in an Enteric Candidiasis Mouse Model

Background & Objective: Candidiasis has gained importance due to its increasing prevalence in immunocompromised patients. Antifungal drugs such as fluconazole and amphotericin B are used for the treatment of candidiasis. One of the biggest problems faced in clinical practice is resistance for most of these drugs. The antifungal drugs derived from natural products have helped to overcome this pr...

Study on the antioxidant activity and in vitro antifungal activity of Verbascum speciosum methanolic extract

The present study was conducted to determine the antioxidant and antifungal effects ofmethanol extract from aerial part of Verbascum speciosum. The total phenolic andflavonoid content and the antioxidant activity of the plant extract were determined byusing the Folin-Ciocalteau and the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicalscavenging assays. The total phenols and flavonoid content o...

Encapsulation of nystatin in nanoliposomal formulation: characterization, stability study and antifungal activity against Candida albicans

In this study, nystatin liposomal formulation was prepared and characterized. The physicochemical properties of formulations including vesicle size, drug entrapment stability and in vitro release were studied. The highest entrapment efficiency of nystatin into liposomes was obtained about 70% when cholesterol (CHO) was added to the formulations prepared with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. In a...

Structure–Activity Relationships among Antifungal Nylon-3 Polymers: Identification of Materials Active against Drug-Resistant Strains of Candida albicans

Fungal infections are a major challenge to human health that is heightened by pathogen resistance to current therapeutic agents. Previously, we were inspired by host-defense peptides to develop nylon-3 polymers (poly-β-peptides) that are toxic toward the fungal pathogen Candida albicans but exert little effect on mammalian cells. Based on subsequent analysis of structure-activity relationships ...

In vitro Antifungal Effect of Aqueous Garlic (Allium Sativum) Extract and its Combination with Fluconazole Against Five Common Clinical Candida Isolated from Candidiasis Lesions

Introduction: Increasing rate of candidiasis prevalence and consequently use of antifungal drugs as prophylactic and curative agents has led to the widespread emergence of resistant strains. Therefore this study was designed to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of an aqueous extract of garlic and the synergic effect of garlic extract with fluconazole against common clinical isolates of ...
